Casting Calls vs. Direct Bookings: Pros and Cons

Elle Monroe

When starting a modeling career, you’ll often hear about two main ways to land jobs: casting calls and direct bookings. Both have their advantages and challenges. Here at NVE Agency, we want to help you understand the pros and cons of each so you can make informed decisions about your career.

Casting Calls

A casting call is an open or selective audition where models present themselves to clients, photographers, or casting directors who are looking for the right fit for a specific job.

Pros:

  1. Opportunities for Newcomers – Casting calls allow new models to introduce themselves to industry professionals and showcase their potential.

  2. Experience and Exposure – Attending multiple castings helps you gain confidence, improve your presentation skills, and network within the industry.

  3. Chance to Book Major Jobs – Many high-profile campaigns, fashion shows, and editorial shoots begin with casting calls, giving models a shot at big opportunities.

  4. Feedback and Learning – Even if you don’t get booked, casting directors may provide valuable feedback to improve your future auditions.

Cons:

  1. High Competition – You may be competing with hundreds of other models for the same role, making it harder to stand out.

  2. Time-Consuming – Castings can take up a lot of your time with long waiting periods and multiple rounds.

  3. No Guarantees – Attending a casting call does not ensure that you’ll book the job, which can be discouraging for some.

Direct Bookings

Direct bookings occur when a client or agency selects a model without requiring them to attend a casting. This often happens when a model has built a strong portfolio and reputation.

Pros:

  1. Less Time-Consuming – Models skip the audition process and go straight to the job, saving time and effort.

  2. Better Compensation – Direct bookings often come with higher pay since the client already values the model’s experience and look.

  3. Stronger Relationships – Clients who book models directly often continue working with them for future projects, creating long-term professional relationships.

  4. More Predictability – With direct bookings, you have a clear schedule and agreement in place, making it easier to manage your career and time.

Cons:

  1. Requires an Established Reputation – Direct bookings are typically reserved for models who have proven themselves in the industry, making it harder for beginners to land these opportunities.

  2. Less Opportunity to Experiment – With casting calls, you might discover new modeling niches or styles, while direct bookings often focus on what you’re already known for.

  3. Limited Access to New Clients – If you rely solely on direct bookings, you may miss out on potential clients who could discover you through open castings.

Which One is Right for You?

If you’re new to modeling, attending casting calls is a great way to gain experience, build your portfolio, and establish yourself in the industry. As you progress, direct bookings can offer more stability and efficiency in your career.

A balanced approach is often best—attend castings to expand your opportunities while working towards gaining enough recognition to land direct bookings.

No matter which path you take, confidence, professionalism, and persistence are key. Stay prepared, keep refining your skills, and take every opportunity to learn and grow.
